Who we are
This website is operated by the North Queens Heritage Society ("the Society", "we", "us"), a volunteer-run registered Canadian charity (registration no. 888862398RR0001) that operates the North Queens Heritage House Museum & Archives at 25 West Caledonia Road, Caledonia, Nova Scotia B0T 1B0.
We respect your privacy. This policy explains what personal information we collect through this website and at the museum, why we collect it, and the choices you have.
Information we collect
Information you give us
- Contact and research enquiries - your name, email address, and optionally your phone number, organization, community and the details of your question.
- Volunteer and job interest forms - your name, contact details, availability, interests and anything you choose to tell us about yourself.
- Calendar orders - your name, contact details and, for mailed copies, a postal address.
- Memberships and donations - the details needed to record your membership and, where applicable, issue an official receipt for income tax purposes.
- Artefact and archive donations - the donor's name and contact details and the history of the item, which may become part of the permanent catalogue record.
Information collected automatically
Like most websites, our web host keeps standard server logs (IP address, browser type, pages requested and the date and time). We use these only to keep the site secure and working. We do not currently use advertising or analytics cookies.
How we use your information
- To answer your question, research request or order.
- To organize volunteers and, when positions are open, to consider job applicants.
- To maintain membership records and send notices of meetings and events to members.
- To issue charitable receipts and meet our reporting obligations to the Canada Revenue Agency.
- To document the provenance of donated artefacts, photographs and documents.
We do not sell, rent or trade personal information, and we will not add you to a mailing list unless you ask us to.
How we store and protect it
Personal information is kept only by the board members and volunteers who need it to do the task you asked us about. Paper records are kept at the Heritage House; electronic records are kept in password-protected accounts.
We keep information only as long as it is needed: enquiries are generally kept for up to two years, volunteer and applicant details for as long as you remain involved (or one hiring season for applicants), and financial and receipt records for the period required by the Canada Revenue Agency. Donation provenance records are kept permanently as part of the collection.
Cookies and third-party services
This site stores one small preference in your browser's local storage: whether you chose the light or dark theme. It contains no personal information and never leaves your device.
Some pages load content or features from other providers, which may set their own cookies or receive your IP address under their own privacy policies:
| Service | Used for |
|---|---|
| The embedded feed of our Facebook page on the home page. | |
| Google Maps | The map on the contact page. |
| Google Fonts, jsDelivr, cdnjs | Typefaces, Bootstrap and icon files that make the site look and work as it should. |
| UserWay | The accessibility widget (text size, contrast and similar tools). |
| CanadaHelps | Processing online donations - we never see your card details. |
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The site will still work, although embedded content may not display.
Photographs at events
Volunteers sometimes take photographs at museum events and may share them on this website, on Facebook or in the calendar. If you would prefer not to appear, just let the photographer know, or contact us afterwards and we will remove the image.
Your choices and rights
You may ask to see the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it where we are not required to keep it. You may also withdraw your consent to being contacted at any time.
We follow the principles of Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) as good practice. If you are not satisfied with our response to a privacy concern, you may contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Children
Our website is intended for a general audience. We do not knowingly collect personal information online from children under 13 without the consent of a parent or guardian. Student volunteers under 18 are asked to provide a parent or guardian's contact details.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the website or our activities change. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last revised.
